Virginia Elisabetta Luisa Carlotta Antonietta Teresa Maria Oldoini (Firenze, 23 marzo 1837) nacque marchesa. Si dice però che il suo vero padre fosse tale Giuseppe Potianowski di Monte Rotondo, uno squattrinato discendente del re di Polonia.
Soprannominata “Nicchia”(per via del suo modo di rannicchiarsi), Virginia era bellissima e intelligente: alta, bionda, occhi verdi profondi e vellutati. Col tempo si sarebbe conquistata la fama di donna più bella d’Italia e d’Europa e sarebbe riuscita a far risaltare il suo fascino con abiti audaci, strani, a volte spettacolari, che non indossava mai più di una volta. Adorava i colori lilla, indaco, malva e violetto.
Per tutta la vita fu una grafomane posseduta dalla voglia di passare alla storia. Ci ha lasciato il Journal intime, un diario in cui annotò di tutto, in particolare i suoi incontri amorosi utilizzando una sorta di rozzo linguaggio cifrato. Così, ad esempio, ne aveva inventato uno per camuffare i dettagli più intimi: “e” stava per embrassements, baci e carezze; “b” per baci; “bx” per baci e carezze più intimi; “f” per rapporto completo.
Ne utilizzava uno anche per catalogare i suoi amanti: “FF” stava per fifty-fifty, ovvero 50% amore e 50% affari; “PR” significava pour revanche, per vendetta.
Fu un’abile spia.
Virginia dimostrò di essere molto disinvolta con gli uomini già durante l’adolescenza. Con le donne invece ebbe sempre un rapporto competitivo. Diceva infatti: “Le eguaglio per nascita, le supero per bellezza, le giudico per ingegno.”
Ciò che ha sempre colpito gli storici è come la contessa riuscisse a combinare un’indole passionale con un atteggiamento di lucida freddezza. Difficile dire se amò mai veramente qualcuno.
Non ancora diciassettenne sposò il conte Francesco Verasis di Castiglione Tinella e di Costigliole d’Asti, cugino di Camillo Benso di Cavour. Egli sapeva che lei non lo amava, ma era determinato a sposare la donna più bella d’Italia. Ne era profondamente innamorato e continuò ad amarla nonostante i ripetuti tradimenti di lei tanto che, prima di separarsi, si sarebbe rovinato per soddisfare i suoi capricci.
Dopo il matrimonio, Virginia si trasferì da La Spezia (la città in cui viveva) a Torino e fece il suo travolgente debutto alla corte di Vittorio Emanuele di Savoia, che ne rimase ipnotizzato.
E nemmeno lo stesso Cavour ne rimase indifferente ma, oltre alla bellezza, egli vide in lei una singolare vocazione all’intrigo.
Fu così che decise di ricorrere a lei per sedurre Napoleone III e avvicinarlo alla causa risorgimentale. Il Conte di Cavour sapeva benissimo, infatti, che senza l’aiuto della Francia, nessuna indipendenza dall’Austria sarebbe stata possibile. Né si sarebbe potuto eliminare lo Stato Pontificio che ancora occupava tutto il centro Italia.
Così si trasferì a Parigi col marito e il suo successo a corte fu immediato e spettacolare. La sua prima apparizione a Palazzo la vide seminuda come una dea dell’antichità.
Le dame, eccitatissime, dimenticarono l’etichetta e salirono su poltrone e divani per meglio poterla osservare. Gli uomini erano tutti letteralmente ipnotizzati.
E naturalmente, Napoleone III non resistette al suo fascino. Dopo mezz’ora d’amore nella camera azzurra del castello di Compiègne, la missione di Virginia era compiuta.
La Contessa di Castiglione fu impiegata come spia di Stato anche durante la Seconda guerra d’Indipendenza.
Dopo la separazione, il marito morì tragicamente schiacciato dalle ruote della carrozza reale. Virginia perse anche l’unico figlio, Giorgio, stroncato dal vaiolo.
Morì sola e psicologicamente instabile il 28 novembre 1899 a Parigi, dopo anni di vita ritirata.
Si dice abbia avuto 43 amanti tra i personaggi più influenti del suo tempo, riuscendo a gestirne anche mezza dozzina contemporaneamente senza che nessuno sapesse degli altri.
La Contessa di Castiglione rivoluzionò anche la moda intima femminile facendo notare, forse per prima, quale effetto avesse sugli uomini la raffinata fantasia delle sottovesti.
Per questo adottò leggeri indumenti intimi di raso o seta neri al posto delle precedenti, pesanti imbottiture e dei mutandoni legati alle caviglie.
Introdusse anche il vezzo delle lenzuola di seta colorate, che lei amava nere, verdi o violette.
E rinverdì la moda delle giarrettiere, già scomparse da tempo: l’uso di ridotte culottes al posto delle lunghe braghe, imponeva anche la scelta di calze di seta da fermare con vezzosi nastri che via via si arricchirono di pizzi, piume, pietre preziose e scritte allusive.
